Hidden Treasure

Matthew 13:44–46 NASB

44 “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found and hid again; and from joy over it he goes and sells everything that he has, and buys that field.

Jesus saw the world differently than everyone else. He saw with eyes that could perceive the Kingdom of heaven. To Him, the Kingdom wasn't far away. No, it was exactly as He said: "It is at hand."

When I read these verses, I ask myself: How hidden was the treasure? Was it really that difficult to find? I wonder if the Kingdom of God isn't as hidden as we often think. And if it isn't that hard to find, how many times do we miss it?

Have you discovered the beauty of the Kingdom? The treasure that it is? Jesus longs for us to experience the nearness of His Kingdom—not someday, but now.

There is something we ought to notice: when this man finds the treasure, he joyfully sells everything he has in order to possess it. He isn't forced. He isn't reluctant. He gladly gives up lesser things because he has found something infinitely greater.

There is nothing more valuable than the treasure he has found. I wonder if we treat God's Kingdom with the same regard. What would it look like to trade in lesser things for the ultimate thing?

Jesus once challenged a rich young ruler to leave behind the thing he valued most and follow Him. The man walked away grieving because he treasured his possessions more than the Kingdom of God. His sorrow revealed where his heart truly was (Matthew 19:21–30).

I appreciate this young man's honesty. He was honest about what he struggled to give up. Are we honest about the things that often hold us back? About what we struggle to surrender?

The reality is that we all have treasures. They may be wealth, success, comfort, approval, control, or security. None of these things are inherently bad, but they make terrible kings.

Paul discovered a greater treasure. He wrote, "I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord" (Philippians 3:8).

Compared to Jesus, everything else faded in value.

The Kingdom is worth everything because Jesus is its King. His riches are unfathomable. His grace is inexhaustible. His presence satisfies what nothing else can.

Today, take an inventory of your heart. What do you treasure most? What occupies your thoughts, captures your affection, and drives your decisions?

The things we treasure reveal the direction of our lives.

May we be people who have truly seen the hidden treasure and who, with joy, order our lives around the surpassing worth of knowing Jesus.

Would you pray to see with Kingdom eyes? Would you invite His Holy Spirit to open your eyes to see the nearness of the Kingdom of God?
